It's been a while...
It’s been a while since I’ve written, a little over a year actually, and I wanted to touch base with you all and let you know what I’ve been up to. It’s been kind of a crazy year with some good and some bad, and definitely some great!
Shortly after I wrote the first post last year a major renovation started on my house. And I mean major. Everything from electrical wiring, to some plumbing, new heating and air conditioning, a gutted kitchen and bathroom, new roof, new plastering and stucco on the inside and outside walls, new railing on the porch, refinished floors, new hearth on the fireplace…basically everything. So, I’ve been living on a construction site in the guest house for almost a year now. It hasn’t been easy, especially having to coordinate almost every day with the contractor and subcontractors. The house is kind of a strange layout with the front door actually in the backyard, so figuring out what to do with Booker everyday has been a challenge at times. Luckily, the guys working on the house have been great with him and making sure he’s safe and I’m pretty sure well-fed since he seems to be a little more attentive to when I eat than he used to be. At times I wondered if it was all worth it, but the end is definitely in sight. The kitchen appliances started to go in today to be hooked up tomorrow, then a few more inspections and a good cleaning and the bulk of the work should be done. I can’t even tell you how excited I am to get all of my stuff back out of the garage in the next few weeks. It’s going to be like an early Christmas!
I’ve done a little traveling over the past year, too. I went back to Texas a few times earlier in the year to see the parents. My step-dad is still recovering from a surgery he had back in the early spring, and going back to help out my mom and keep her company was something I was lucky enough to be able to do. I was also lucky enough to go on a trip to Italy with some of my life-long friends and their families. We do a big trip every other year and this was our first European vacation, if you don’t count the British Virgin Islands (our first one about ten years ago). On this vacay there was a total of 18 of us, 9 adults and 9 kids, and we rented an amazing villa in Tuscany for a week, and then spent a few days in Rome. We had an incredible time. We always do, though. I’m so fortunate to have such great friends that it doesn’t matter where we are, we always have a fantastic time just being together. We relaxed, played games, swam, relaxed, ate, played more games, relaxed, and may or may not have imbibed quite a large amount of wine. And gelato. How can you not in Italy?
And now, fall is here and it’s time to slow down a little bit and if you’re like me, hunker down. I’m excited that I’ll have my fireplace back, with some new comfy couches and rugs. I was able to proofread some great things this past year, and I’d love to have some more to work on in the upcoming cold, wintry months. So, if you’re in need of a proofreader, or know someone who is, please get in touch! And I’ll be back in touch soon, too.
